Creating keepsakes starts with a photo — here’s how

To create your custom fingerprint or footprint keepsake, all you need is a clear photo of the print. You can use an existing print, or take new prints with an ink pad or a simple pencil and tape method to capture the print on paper. Then, just snap a well-lit, in-focus photo straight on, and upload it with your order. We’ll take care of the rest!

Preparing prints for your keepsake

Use An Existing Print
Already have a fingerprint or footprint? Just snap a clear photo and upload it with your order.

Take Prints with Ink Pad
Create visible prints using a black ink pad—great for fingerprints and footprints. Washable paint is also a safe and effective option for baby footprints.

Fingerprints with Pencil & Tape Method
For the most detailed fingerprints, use our recommended pencil and tape method. It’s simple and we’ll walk you through it step-by-step.

Pencil & Tape Method

Step 1

Shade a dark, glossy patch of graphite on a sheet of paper using a regular pencil.

Step 2

Gently rub your fingertip over the graphite patch to coat it with pencil.

Step 3

Continue rubbing until your fingertip is evenly covered and appears dark.

Step 4

Press the sticky side of a piece of clear tape firmly over your fingertip to lift the print.

Step 5

Stick the tape onto a clean sheet of white paper. Repeat a few times to get a clear, defined print.

Step 6

Label each print with the name of the person it belongs to. Then take clear, focused photos and either upload them with your order or email them to info@flutterbyeprints.com.

Black Ink Pad Method

Step 1
Apply black ink to the pad of your fingertip or foot, covering it evenly.

Step 2
Press your finger straight down onto the paper—avoid rolling or shifting.

Step 3
Use light pressure for the clearest fingerprint lines; pressing too hard can blur the details.

Step 4
Take each fingerprint individually rather than trying to form a heart shape.

Step 5
Make several attempts to ensure you capture a clear, detailed print to choose from.

Step 6
Label each print with the name of the person it belongs to. Then take clear, focused photos and either upload them with your order or email them to info@flutterbyeprints.com.
